Gardendale High School seniors and juniors may be allowed to participate in a more flexible school day.  Early dismissal or late arrival options during the prescribed school day are for students who are participating in planned-and-supervised educational programs or work experience.  This includes college dual enrollment programs, community service, internship programs, Early College, work or other approved programs.  If a student wishes to pursue other options, he/she must comply with the requirements listed below. 


Requirements for seniors to pursue the option of a flexible school day:

  1. Students must be on target to graduate and have the required GPA in the case of dual enrollment.
  2. Flexible scheduling must occur at the beginning of the school day and/or end of the day, not in the middle of the day.
  3. Students must have personal transportation to arrive late or leave early.
  4. Students may not ride the bus to school and wait one or two blocks to begin classes. Student may not wait one or two blocks to ride the bus home.
  5. Students’ arrival or departure should be no more than 15 minutes prior to the beginning or ending of class.
  6. Students must have all required courses for graduation on their schedule.
  7. Students must have earned a college and career ready indicator.
  8. Students will be required to submit proof of work (copies of pay stubs) or community service (periodic reports from community service supervisor – cannot be a parent).  We will also need contact information of managers or supervisors.


A form must be completed with signatures from the parent/guardian and student.  Completed form should be returned to student’s grade-level counselor.
