KCarl Smith of Frederick Douglass Republicans invites the students of Gardendale High School to participate in the Black History Month Frederick Douglass Essay Contest.

All essays should specifically address the Essay Topic, which is:

What are some of the Life-Empowering Values of Frederick Douglass you can apply to your daily life? Here are some suggested topics:

  • Free Speech
  • Critical Thinking
  • Taking Your Education Seriously
  • The Value of Work
  • Limited Power of Government
  • Personal Responsibility
  • Economic Prosperity
  • Douglass’ Action Plan – obtain any kind of job, the right job, or start your own business (entrepreneurship)

Essay Length - Please write a 500-1000 word typed essay on two or more topics, selected from above.

Teacher Must Submit Essays To Principal Blankenship - All essays must be submitted by a teacher on behalf of the student(s).

Deadline - Essays must be submitted no later than 1:00 pm Central Time,

*March 12, 2018.*

*Essay must include:

-Essay Topics

-First and Last name

-Email address

-Active phone number


Plagiarism - All essays must be the original work of the student whose name is listed on the submission form. Plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.

Judges - Essays will be judged on their ability to answer the topic question in an articulate, clear, and organized manner, using the quotes from the Frederick Douglass Life-Empowering Values Card. KCarl Smith Inc. will evaluate essay submissions in a fair and unbiased four-round judging system, where judges will all use the same criteria. Judges will be selected by KCarl Smith Inc. based on their backgrounds and expertise in education, writing, and the subject matter. Decisions of the judges are final.
